Illinois Record of Service

The Great Lakes West Comprehensive Center works collaboratively with representatives from state education agencies in Illinois and Wisconsin to provide capacity building technical assistance around current state initiatives regarding No Child Left Behind (NCLB) implementation. State managers provide regular updates on the progress of these initiatives; following is the latest record of services for each state, carried out in collaboration with Great Lakes West staff members, subcontractors, Advisory Council members, and state department of education staff members. Great Lakes West State Manager: Monique Chism, Ph.D.

The Great Lakes West Comprehensive Center works collaboratively with representatives from Illinois to provide capacity-building technical assistance for current state initiatives regarding No Child Left Behind (NCLB) implementation. The state manager provides regular updates on the progress of these initiatives. Following is the latest record of service for Illinois, carried out in collaboration with Great Lakes West staff members, subcontractors, Advisory Council members, and state department of education staff members (last updated July 2007).

Integrated Management Systems
On May 9, 2007, Great Lakes West Director Linda Miller and Illinois State Manager Monique Chism, Ph.D., attended the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) division administrator's meeting in Springfield, Illinois, in order to introduce Great Lakes West and current work to ISBE staff. The bulk of the conversation focused on integrated performance-based monitoring systems. Shortly after this kickoff meeting, a project team was identified to continue the work and map out long- and short-term goals and objectives for the project. Currently the team is reviewing the structures and practices of other state departments of education, such as New York and Texas. After conducting these reviews, Great Lakes West will take them back to the state to inform its consideration of possible system structures.

High School Renewal
In May, after talking with coalition members about pressing research needs for Illinois educators regarding high school initiatives, Great Lakes West shared with the coalition the following two new policy briefs from the National High School Center:

• State and District-Level Support for Successful Transitions Into High School
• Toward Ensuring a Smooth Transition Into High School

In June, Great Lakes West began work with a subcommittee of the coalition to support the coalition's conference evaluation needs for the second annual statewide conference, which was held June 14-15, 2007, in Bloomington, Illinois. Great Lakes West assisted with developing, implementing, and evaluating end-of-conference evaluations.

Parent Involvement
Beginning with the April 24 conversations with the Title I parent involvement coordinator at ISBE, parent involvement has become an emerging issue for Great Lakes West. Staff members have become part of the advisory board for the Illinois Parent Information and Resource Center. Currently, there are a number of potential projects on which to collaborate that will advance ISBE's efforts to help districts work and communicate effectively with Illinois parents.
